"Proudly forgetting over a decade of video games history"

Sonic4.... So, what do we think? |
| | | I think the criticism that botthered me the most was that it is unorignal and feels more like a remake of the 1st game. |
Nah, there's no need to worry too much about that.
This was one of the big issues back when the game's demo was released. and indeed: The first level is nothing more than a cheap wannabe Green Hill Zone. But if there's one thing done right with Sonic 4, then it's the level design (contrary to Sonic's various handheld adventures). Obviously some elements are borrowed from ye olde gems, but all in all it's got enough new elements. As much as I despise to bring up the dastardly plumber's name, it is best compared to New Super Mario Bros.

Despite the fact that Mr. Plumb-it-up's game has the same physics as it's original counterpart, and Sonic 4, well... you know how things turned out.
On a completely unrelated note, one thing I never really managed to understand was the green eyes vs. black eyes debate. Roel said above that it's part of an inferior redesign. As biased as I am, being the DC's video defender 'n stuff, I wouldn't call it inferior. To me, someone a tad younger than the average Senile Team fan, a 3D Sonic without green eyes would appear completely unnatural. And that's the problem - due to the fact that there was no real 5th generation era Sonic game it seems like there was a split in not only the design, but also in the fanbase. Which is why making a new Sonic game which appeals to everyone is nothing more than an utopian concept.
Long story short: Less Sonic. MOAR ALEX KIDD PLZ.
Oh, and I say FAIL. The homing attack broke the game for me. It's was great in the adventure series, but for 2D it just, well, fails. |

A lot of people say that, but I disagree. Sonic 4's level design is shit. Sure, there are some nice ideas to be found in the levels, but not all of them actually work (I'm thinking of rolling balls in particular now). But the worst part to me is the global layout of almost every level in Sonic 4: first a lot of (poorly structured!) loops, ramps and springs, and then several deadly holes in a row. So first you're just running around doing random stuff, until suddenly and without warning, you have to be slow and precise or you'll plummit to your death.
By what standard is that good level design? |

Well, I compared it to the handheld games, Sonic Advance and the like. Their level design felt very lackluster to me. But after all, it all boils down to personal opinion, eh? |
| |
|
| | Sure. As long as everyone agrees it's fact, not opinion, that the physics are broken. |

|
| | I like the green eyes...
Also just for the sake of argument Sonic Jam while only features a hubworld/level is a fully functional 5th Gen Sonic.
You also have Travelers Tales Sonic R and Sonic Jam by STI.
One off topic thing I've finished Sonic 3D Blast and then I played Sonic Adventure and I instantly compared it to Sonic 3D Blast and I was like damn if only that game had the homing attack it would've been playable, you could've had multiple enemies ina level and could've been an over all better experience.
Off course 3D blast is 3D blast, and Sonic 4 is 2D but my first impression of homing attack in adventure 1 was that it felt like the Fire Shield attack from Sonic 3. In Sonic Adventure 2 they also incorporated the Water Shield bounce into game play. Recently in Sonic Colors they incorporated the Magnetic Shield double jump into regular gameplay.
The point the homing attack is a natural progression of gameplay, unfortunately it is incorporated in 2D games without the staple shields. |

| | I got my hands on the iPhone version and beat the game in 7 games.
I have to say playing it was a chore, I assumed collecting all 7 emeralds would've helped somehow maybe a fun boss fight but all I got was a silhoutte of Metal Sonic .
The gameplay is truly terrible (and it doesn't help when your playing it on the iphone), but I guess you could power through it on the console.
But damn it the boss fights sucked, and why the hell were they in a seperate act?
But In my opinion the biggest sin was the absense of Robotnik Theme, the only thing all the geny titles had in common was they kept remixing the same theme. |
