| | We would need some serious budget and loads of animators & programmers for that. If you can provide that we will have a go at it |

| | First of all, go back to school and learn how to read. It says in the FAQ that AotB will not have netplay or online features. Failure to read the FAQ and asking questions that were asked many times before is a bannable offense.
Secondly, while you're in school, learn how to write. A string of words is far from a sentence.
Thirdly, welcome to the forums. |

| | Well, BoR and AotB are games for real men, who don't scare easily. |

| | Roel's never been one to pull his punches... It's slightly scary, yet at the same time somewhat refreshing... |

What budget if you can be more specific I could see what I can do. Its a long shoot but still worth a try. Also it would be good to consider commercial side if mmo is to be made. How can that benefit the investors. If you are interested please provide detail information about whole project (budget, how many programmers, artist etc. and can you find them, hardware, software and everything elce...)
I read FAQ and it mentions netplay and online but that is not what mmo is about, right. It is completely different platform (server), concept of the game (with maps), and perhaps different platform, although I must say that I am trilled for reading that you are using assembler in game development. |

| | Well, I didn't expect to see this thread re-opened. You are correct, of course, that netplay does not an MMO make. So let's look at some more details.
Game development budgets usually start around a couple hundred thousand dollars. But that's for a "normal" game. Not a "massive" one. Like you already said, an MMO also requires servers, years of support, payment systems, a huge, expanding world, an enormous pile of configuration options (for character creation, etc), measures to avoid cheating and much more (thorough) testing. This obviously means MMO development should be expected to be quite expensive, as well as lengthy.
On the technical side, there are also hurdles to overcome. As you may already know, most MMOs use a turn-based battle system. The outcome of the battle is often based on chance, and a player's chances improve with their "level". The reason why this system is applied by MMO developers is not just personal preference. Real-time battle just happens to be extremely difficult to manage over a system with hundreds or even thousands of players. Turn-based fighting requires less bandwidth, less CPU power, is less likely to suffer from lag, and is easier to protect from cheating. Real-time battle would make the project even more lengthy, even more expensive and add a significant risk factor as it may even prove impossible.
This being said, I actually think it would be awesome to create a game like this. I've been thinking about the concept before, and I'm sure I can come up with a lot of great ideas. If someone really would be crazy enough to finance such a project, I'd be the happiest clam on the beach. |

| | What I had in mind was not classical MMO like Lineage and WoW. For those games budget was probably in millions but for something like maple story the budget would be smaller. I was thinking more in lines of simple game (of course not as simple as maple story).
Can this battle system be solved by limiting maps (like one level in side scrollers) in game for amount of players that can enter. Then you would have lets say 20-40 players on map/system/server. It would probable have to have some elements of RPG for deciding battles but it would depend mostly on players skills.
I know that from my side this problems seem to be easily solvable but reality is different. It probably is practically impossible to create 2d side scolling beat em up mmo otherwise someone would do it. All these years of technology and game development you would think that man can easily make such games |

| | Cheer up, mate. I'm sure there's a solution and/or workaround for each of the technical challenges. The one you mentioned yourself (spreading the load over multiple servers) is a perfectly viable one, provided you have enough servers in enough locations. |
