I only ever heard bad things about Dell (missing drivers, missing RAM, dated video cards), so I wouldn't recommend it. But don't take my word for it, because I'm not really into PC hardware.

i see them advertise everyday, so they cant be that bad. somebody had to have pressed charges on them for that, right? and i got a 20 inch monitor from them.

I see them advertise with "twice the memory at no extra cost" all the time, but even then their systems still only have half as much RAM in it as most others. But that may not be true in all countries.

Well, as someone who has worked for a corrupt and often law breaking electronics company, its quite easy to pay off court fines if you are a huge business and it can take years for the law and bad press to finally catch up with you.

People feel safe with a company like Dell, and between feeling safe and being lazy, a lot of people would rather chose a brand name than do the legwork and shop with someone reliable. I always think of Dell as the McDonalds of PC's, prepacked, cheap and not really what you need, but very very convenient and advertised everywhere.

I'm not really attacking them, if you know what the service is like and still buy from them, its not uncommon to get a good deal or reliable hardware, just less likely.

As for your PC spec. It looks OK for what you need it for. Its lower than mine and I haven't upgraded for years. The graphics card is probably the biggest worry. Hard disk space really depends on what you use it for. I don't understand the new processors, check its not the equivalent of a Celeron and if not, you're ok. Memory seems adequate, 1GB should be fine as long as you don't have a high res desktop (which if you have a 20 inch flatscreen might be the case, my monitor looks awful in anything under 1280 x 1024

so kirby, your saying i could probably run the games i specified in my first post with the graphics settings at max?

(no im not gay, being as i have a bunny avatar, the system picked it randomly, it just so happened to pick me a gay rabbit,  )

Really wouldn't worry about what people think of your avatar... (Ahem...)

The computer seems fine, going by what I can see. Dual Core processors should make life plenty fun for you, though I'm uncertain as to how useful they are for solid gaming. The concept's still pretty new, y'see, and I hadn't even heard of a Pentium D until recently. I reckon they should be fine, though.

Wish I could give you an idea of the graphics card, but I've not a clue when it comes to ATI... But so long as it's not an onboard card (which it isn't) you'll be fine!

Just a warning... I've had a few friends get Dells. They've been fine, at least until the point when they wanted to upgrade. Dell have this annoying habit of making it so you can't upgrade a system you buy from them, so you have no choice to buy a new one. As such, if you don't mind the extra time and hassle, and you know someone good at this sort of thing, I'd recommend building one from scratch. Still, I understand that that's really not for everyone...

As far as I know, you'll be able to run all those games you mentioned in the first post at MAX (even Half-Life 2 I think). I got a weaker processor (Centrino(Pentium M) 1.8Ghz) .5GB more RAM and a weaker video card (64MB) and I can run Half-life 2 almost at max (no AA) with excellent frame rate.

I don't really have an opinion about Dell (never owned a Dell computer) but I've seen pretty powerful PCs from Dell.

As far as the games you mentioned, you can play them at a high framerate. I'm not sure about maximum settings. Not all games run at maximum settings AND fast. My Unreal Tournament 99 still jerks a bit sometimes and thats really old, it depends on the game and how your PC is set up. Generally though, that should be fine for the games you need and Half Life 2 should play fine (as long as you have an internet connection)

I think you should check out this thread

if you haven't yet (or even if you have)!
