A couple questions

13 Oct 2008 18:09
Okay, so I was around here...What, a couple years ago? I was working on a mod I never finished, but within the past day or two I decided to start up a new project(lost all the old stuff). There are a couple things I don't remember though, and I haven't been able to find the answers after doing some searching. If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

My questions are this:

1) What's the max number of specials a hero can have?
2) What were all the different inputs?

I can very vaguely remember, but I'm nowhere near sure enough to start coding up a character.

Also, does anyone happen to know of a site where I could find voices from the KoF games? Or let me know of a method I could use to get clean voice samples. I tried setting up a PS2 emulator so I could record the voices I need from KoFXI, but I can't get it to work properly(I do have the bios files for it).

1) In original Beats of Rage (as opposed to OpenBOR), there are buttwo special moves: special (executed by pressing the special button) and freespecial ( ).

2) I hope this is what you need to know:

Basic moves
Punch, automatically turns into a combo when pressed multiple times. The combo sequence is 1-1-2-3. Attack 3 knocks the opponent down.
Bidirectional special move, used to escape from sticky situations at the cost of a little health.
 Jump.
,  In-air attack, knocks down opponent.
, +  In-air attack, does not knock down opponent.
Unidirectional special move, does not drain health.

While grabbing (walk into opponent to grab)
Pummel opponent, automatically combos as 1-1-2. Attack 2 knocks the opponent down.
Performs attack 2 directly to knock the opponent down.
+  Throw opponent.
Hold for two seconds to release opponent.

When thrown
+ Hold to land safely.

OpenBOR allows for more moves and different combo sequences to be used.

It is possible to obtain sound effects from most King of Fighters games using a Neo Geo emulator which supports dip switches (e.g. Kawaks). Using the right settings, you can do various things such as going into debug mode and disabling music. I don't know what the settings are, though. You'll have to Google for that.

You can also use Nebula Jukebox to play the sounds and voices (you have to add them to it first by modifying a DAT file). The only problem with this method is that you have to search through all the sound banks. This becomes painfully clear when you realise that there are 6,912 individual sounds (27 banks x 256 codes), so it might take some time to find the ones you want. Fortunately, most voices are grouped together, so you can pick random spots and search around those codes.

Alternatively, I know that certain KOF2000 and KOF2002 roms have missing music (2000 misses Kula's theme, 2002 misses the Orochi New Faces theme). An easy way to get sounds is to pick training mode and have Kula as your opponent on 2000 and any of the Orochi forms of Yashiro, Shermie or Chris in 2002. You should be able to get the sounds from most pre-2003 characters.

For XI, you can't use either of the methods, so I can't help you there.

Hi Vies! where have you been?

Roel has answered your questions but I'll give answer for OpenBoR

For FREESPECIAL, the default limit is 8 but now it's expandable to any number you want. And you can define the command you wish for each freespecial. The length of the command could be just one action button to 15 direction + 1 action button.

For SPECIAL, currently there are only 3. SPECIAL is default special, SPECIAL2 is executed by pressing forward+special (ala Streets of Rage 2) and SPECIAL3 is air special or executed by pressing special while jumping.

Aside from what Roel posted above, OpenBoR supports 3 more attack buttons.
Also, OpenBoR have 'cancel' command to change current animation.
In addition to those, with script, you can take change animation by pressing button or take the input to do somethingelse.
