Dreamcast official releases

10 Feb 2008 14:17
Hi,

I'm new to this forum. I have registered myself to ask about this: why don't you get a license from sega to release games officially, with Dreamcast logos, game number and all that stuff?

You can tell me go away, we do it for fun and whatever but you can sell your upcoming games that way and a lot of people would buy them.

You've got the skills to release official DC games.

You asked a valid question politely, and while I can't answer that question, I can say you won't be told to go away.

Thank you for your kind words and confidence, NaOnaK.

On many systems, official licencing can involve unwelcome fees and paperwork, but I have to admit that I don't actually know how (and if) SEGA would handle this for a new Dreamcast release. It might be worth investigating.

Hmm, I can think of two reasons they may reject such a thing.

First, when they license it, they kinda put their name as guarantee that it'll work, but with CD games, there are systems you can't play them on, right?
And possibly there could be a problem with an international release...

Would be a nice touch to have the original Sega and Dreamcast logos on RotB and R4, though.
And later you could tell your grandchildren you've been a licensed Dreamcast Developer...

Oooh, good thinking.

I don't know if I'll ever have grandchildren, but if I won't, I'll be sure to annoy someone with that bit of information.

As long as it's not me, we'll continue to be on the same page.

No. Sega will NOT license Dreamcast games on CDs, they said it before.

You need a lot of money for it. Also you have to convince to Sega that your game will be successful enough to get a profit for Sega. Also since the game will be pressed on GD-ROM, the price will not be like the unoffcial Goat Store Publishing releases.

Isn't GD-ROM pressing completely abolished by now?

No, that was just a rumor. Sega didn't announce it.

Plus the Border Down game got a new print last month

Same machines that can press cd can easly be set to press gd. Doesnt matter if there closed down setting one up at any point to release a game is doable.

I think it'd be better to see independent releases of AotB and R4.

Bleem!cast, Feet of Fury and Last Hope proofed that these releases can create a big buzz in the biz and will even see reviews by major video game magazines around the world.

We need more releases like this and I am sure that both R4 and AotB -along with Donk, Dynamite Dreams and Dal Force- will explode like a bomb once they're released.

Not for me. I really want official releases, that's why I asked. There have been a lot of shooters coming out officially for the DC lately and all have sold very well. Even the Border Down reprint.
So another kind of top-quality game like senile team's, officially released, would sell well to. SEGA might think of releasing it. I have no clue about how to contact sega or the money or whatever but it would be very nice to have an official release with all the other DC games, with its matching ID code, etc.

I mean there are people like me that just don't want unofficial stuff. Not because of the quality, but because of being unofficial:(

I hope you understand me.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't understand how an ID code would make a game more worthwhile.

Just one game more like any other one in the official catalogue.

Hm, let me try to understand you by allowing me to ask what you thought about the Last Hope package ? - or didn't you buy it because it wasn't an official release ?

- Also, let's say R4 would look exactly like an NTSC-U Dreamcast release, but just missing the Dreamcast and SEGA logos would you still consider it not worth buying ? - even if it would cost less than the recent NAOMI shmups ?

I would say if he wasnt interested he wouldnt likely be posting, so thats a given. I just cant wait to play this thing.
Few things in life give a person true joy, but damnit this will complete me!
At least I hope it will.

I'd rather vote for it looking like an NTSC-J release, because that's what fills my shelves (and because they look way better), but I don't think it's THAT important.

About Last Hope: The game was just f***ing expensive (and i won't even start talking about the NeoGeo Cart version).

I just wish all these independant devolopers didnt give a shit about using the DC logo. I doubt Sega will act out and sue or bring down any legal reprecustions. I just want the cases to look like offical japanese release with spin cards.

I doubt it's a very good idea. We are talking about commercial products here and SEGA just recently renewed their Dreamcast related trademarks...
